The blessing rain made for a memorable party as 30 people came to celebrate our 21st Wedding Anniversary and New Deck Party on Monday, September 7th at our house in upcountry Maui. Located at the 2,800’ elevation on the slopes of Mt. Haleakalā, the bi-coastal view from our new back yard deck as we look across the isthmus of Maui to the West Maui Mountains is a sight to behold.
This was the first time that we invited my ‘ukulele students from both intermediate and advanced classes at Kaunoa Senior Center for adults 55 and better, along with friends and neighbors. We setup a new 20’x10’ tent along with our 10’x10’ tent so most of our guests could sit under cover outside on the new deck.
The potluck spread was visually tempting and tasty as guests brought local dishes to augment my husband Rich’s famous BBQ ribs and chicken. We setup our small PA system so I could call out the songs and sing over the wireless headset as Rich played his u-bass. Some of our neighbors surprised us when they brought out their ‘ukulele to play and sing along.
How fun it was to sing, play music, and watch spontaneous hula dancing! In January 2009 when I first started teaching ‘ukulele classes, my goal was to teach people my method so that I would have more friends to play music with. I have definitely achieved my goal!
