1st Maui Gig Strolling

The Hawaiian Serenaders

We moved from Maryland to Maui in 2000 because Mele accepted the position of Assistant Superintendent of Haleakalā National Park. Thus Mele completed a circle back to Hawai’i after 27 years of living on the mainland.

Rich got an upright bass and Mele played ‘ukulele as we strolled the Humu Restaurant at the Grand Wailea Resort talking story with diners and playing songs just for them. We are well traveled and loved connecting with people visiting from around the world.

After playing “The Hawaiian Wedding Song” in English for a party celebrating their parents 50th anniversary, Mele asked, “Where did you get married?” The gentleman replied, “Budapest.” The adult children were surprised at Mele’s reply, “Where, in Buda or in Pest?” We had been to Hungary and knew there were two towns on either side of the Blue Danube river.

We strolled every Friday night for 32 gigs from 2004-2006.
