Reviews of Sing-Along with Mele Fong series
Mele launched seven new sing-along classes at Kaunoa in 2016. The format consisted of projecting the song lyrics and ‘ukulele chords from Mele’s computer PowerPoint presentation onto the large screen at the front of the room (similar to sing-along with Mitch Miller) for easy viewing by singers and ‘ukulele players. Mele’s voice and ‘ukulele was amplified along with Rich’s u-bass using Kaunoa’s PA system.
The first program in the Island Songs Sing-Along Series started in February 2016 with eight Hawaiian and hapa haole songs about Maui Nui (the county of Maui consists of the islands of Maui, Molokai, Kahoolawe, Lanai, and Molokini). The presentation of 54 slides took 1 hour and 20 minutes. Introductions for each song included the story behind it in keeping with Hawaiian oral traditions whether the song was Hawaiian or not. For songs in the Hawaiian language, instructions on how to pronounce the lyrics and the translation were included. Afterwards, some participants asked for copies of the songs to which they were directed them to listen to the 95 audio recordings of songs on Mele’s online Fan Club. The title of the series was later renamed as “Sing-Along with Mele Fong.”
The most popular class in 2016 was Hapa Haole Songs with 26 people.
The total signups for 2016 was 130 people for 7 classes (plus 30 people for Christmas program not in Sing-Along format).
“My dad used to sing these songs and this program brought back memories of him,” commented a new participant. She brought her husband “to get him out of the house” and said they really enjoyed themselves. He is 79 years-old and she is 59 years-old, and they both love to sing. The Dicksons heard us (The Hawaiian Serenaders) perform last year at the Maui Marathon Health & Fitness Expo at the Westin Kaanapali when they were vendors. “I like the pictures,” commented Nona Weaver referring to the title slide for each of the songs that include a photo to illustrate the story behind the song.—American Songs 1, 18 July 2016.
