Ukulele Mele History Menu

Ukulele Mele On Maui opened for business on 01 July 2011, and this website launched in November of that year.

Ukulele Mele On Maui - teaching the joy of making music, one 'ukulele player at-a-time.
The Hawaiian Serenaders - performing 'ukulele masters of musical diversity and strumming styles.

The business idea sprung from classroom students who enouraged Mele to expand into the virtual classroom. In January 2009, Mele saw the need for formalized 'ukulele instruction at Kaunoa Senior Center for adults 55 and better. Mele wanted to challenge retirees to expand their horizons, set higher expectations, and do more than they thought they were capable of doing. Thus, Mele developed a music education and 'ukulele curriculum to fulfill that need for adult lifelong learning. Mele has expanded to teaching different levels of 'ukulele, Hawaiian history, and group sing-along classes in addition to leading an Advanced 'ukulele class who perform in the community as the Maui Ukulele Pops Band.

The first private 'ukulele lessons were given at Hale Ho'ike'ike at the Bailey House in November 2011. Students were initially adults most coming from the mainland and out of country, with a few from Maui. Through the years, additional services included 'ukulele workshops and lessons for small groups and children at the Bailey House, 6 packaged song sets of book/DVD/CD, private webcam lessons, online lessons for self-study, and downloadable single song lessons.

In December 2018, services were reduced to online lesons and downloadable single song lessons (no private 'ukulele lessons on Maui and by webcam, and no 'ukulele workshops). Classes at Kaunoa Senior Center are still being offered (93 classes planned in 2019) and The Hawaiian Serenaders (professional duo) are still offering entertainment services. And the beat goes on. (More about learning online in 2019 and beyond).
