April 14. Earth Day Event at Maui Nui Botanical Gardens, Kahului.

"O-M-G, Mele! What an awesome and talented show!! Yes - I was part of your audience at the Earth Day Celebration - Maui Botanical Garden, April 14 2012." --Grace, Maui Business Brainstormers

It was a cool day in paradise when The Hawaiian Serenaders opened the Earth Day event on Saturday. The large tent over the decorated stage was a welcome improvement from last year. Even the audience had a large tent and chairs from which to enjoy the entertainment, another improvement from last year. We performed 12 Hawaiian and hapa haole favorites during our 45-minute show. On one song, Rich switched from u-bass to play Mele's ukulele and sing "Honolulu I'm Coming Back Again" as Mele danced hula. We made eye contact with just a few people in the audience, and saw many more people wandering around looking at the educational booths scattered around the gardens. After our show, we were pleased to hear the next performer as we wandered around far from the stage, knowing that our sound had also carried the distance. It was a pleasant way to spend the morning spreading our musical aloha.

April 20-22. Maui Steel Guitar Festival, Kaanapali Beach Hotel, Kaanapali.

"Are you Mele Fong? I saw you on television." A woman teaching hula lessons recognized Mele as we were setting up our display table and getting ready to teach free ukulele lessons at 2:00 pm Friday in the courtyard of the hotel. Mele also taught free ukulele lessons on Saturday at 11:00 a.m. One person bought a song booklet/DVD/CD to take back to San Francisco where he will be teaching youth ages 8-17 ukulele this summer. A visitor from Oregon scheduled a private lesson during his one week vacation.

This was first year that ukulele was taught at the Annual Henry Allen Hawaiian Steel Guitar Festival at Ka'anapali Beach Hotel, and Mele was the only ukulele teacher invited. We also enjoyed jamming with the musicians, and attending concerts both nights. We saw Alan Akaka and The Islanders at the Hyatt Regency on Friday night, and Henry Allen's concert on Saturday night. The event was organized by the Arts Education for Children Group providing opportunities for artistic and cultural enrichment. If you wait long enough on their website and you'll see Mele's photo in the slide show.
