2013 Ukulele Lesson

Steel Guitar Festival

Over 30 people, mostly beginning ‘ukulele players, showed up at the Kanahele Room for two free 1-hour workshops held on Saturday afternoon of the Maui Hawaiian Steel Guitar Festival at Kaanapali Hotel. The hotel provided 10 instruments and so the people without played air ‘ukulele or sang along to the fun songs Mele taught to play by ear (without music sheets). Afterwards, people commented on how surprised they were to learn so many fun songs (to chalang-alang, waltz, and latin strums) using one to four chords in one-hour.

This was the first year that Alan Akaka was in charge and the festival name changed from the Henry Allen Hawaiian Steel Guitar Festival to the Maui Hawaiian Steel Guitar Festival.
