MEET THE ARTISTS

“Performing artists Mele Fong and Richard Tom, a husband and wife duo originally from Honolulu, Hawaii, have entertained Washington, DC audiences with Polynesian music and dance for the past three years. Prior to forming a duo, they had more than 22 years of professional experience performing with other Hawaiian musical groups in Hawaii and throughout the country. Both sing solos and harmonize traditional and contemporary Hawaiian songs, accompanied on guitar, ukulele, bass, and harmonica. Ms. Fong, of Hawaiian Chinese heritage, also dances Hawaiian hulas to Mr. Tom’s musical accompaniment. They have performed Polynesian shows and background music at indoor/outdoor festivals at the Kennedy Center, Capitol Hill, and the Smithsonian Institution, among others.” – printed on the program of 7 June 1996.
