A southwest Alaska adventure in 2013
The Homer Ukulele Players Event consisted of a total of 16 hours of ukulele instruction and concerts over 4 days of Labor Day Weekend from 30 August – 2 September 2013. An Alaska couple, Marilyn Kirkham and Doug Van Patten, had taken private ukulele lessons on Maui in the winter and helped to coordinate this event in their hometown.
Forty people learned to play ukulele the Ukulele Mele Way with some driving 75 miles each way and some driving over 7 hours and RV camping for 4 days. Some of the participants were members of the Homer Ukulele Group Society (HUGS). The town of Homer is on Kachemak Bay on the Kenai Peninsula, 218 miles southwest of Anchorage and west of Seward. Homer is called the “Halibut Fishing Capital of the World” and known as the Eco and Adventure tourism capital of Alaska, as well as the City of Peonies.
