Adults 55 and better can take Mele’s music classes at Kaunoa Senior Center on Maui
Mele Fong has been an instructor at Kaunoa Senior Center since January 2009. Mele teaches ‘ukulele classes for beginning, intermediate, and advanced players and leads students in performing as the Maui Ukulele Pops Band at community events. She developed a unique method for forming ‘ukulele chord shapes with minimal muscle strain and strumming styles taught by no one else. The curriculum consists of a variety of familiar Hawaiian, hapa haole, and pop songs arranged the fun Ukulele Mele Way.
Mele also teaches Sing-Alongs and Hawaiian History classes. Mele’s husband accompanies on vocals and ukulele-bass at classes and shows.
ON MARCH 18, 2020, KAUNOA SENIOR CENTER CLOSED DUE TO COVID-19. On July 13, 2022 classes resumed with ONE ukulele class combining students from Ukulele Strumming 202 and Advanced Ukulele. Contact Mele at firstname.lastname@example.org for current class schedule.

‘UKULELE BEYOND THE BASICS – First four classes were held 2009 – 2011. The 6-month course met weekly on Monday mornings for 2-hours and culminated in a graduation program where students demonstrated their collective abilities to play 7 different ukulele strums to selected songs. ‘UKULELE STRUMMING 202 – For intermediate students who have graduated from ‘Ukulele Strumming 101. This is a continuing class (unadvertised in Kaunoa’s monthly publication of classes and events) and requires instructor invitation to join. ADVANCED ‘UKULELE – For advanced students (many of whom began playing the Ukulele Mele Way in 2009). SING-ALONG WITH MELE FONG SERIES – For all voices whether you consider yourself a singer or not. Students sing popular songs and learn the stories behind them led by professional musicians on vocals, ‘ukulele, and u-bass. ‘Ukulele players are invited to play along. Themes vary. HAWAIIAN HISTORY & SONG SERIES – For all students curious about Hawai’i’s cultural history. Students learn about Hawai’i’s people, places, and events from a Native Hawaiian and sing relevant songs and learn the stories behind them led by professional musicians on vocals, ‘ukulele, and u-bass. ‘Ukulele players are invited to play along. CHRISTMAS AT KAUNOA – For everyone whether you have taken Mele’s classes or not. Highlights from the year and a sneak peak of what’s coming soon is presented.
