‘Ukulele players and enthusiasts are  invited to join us on Maui from November 12 – 19 for a full week of activities including Ukulele Mele Music Week at Kaunoa Senior Center for adults 55 and better.

The Maui Ukulele Pops Band and the Maui Ukulele Jazz Trio will be performing again. The Band features some of my students from the Advanced Ukulele class at Kaunoa Senior Center. Stop by to say hello at our display booth. Talk to local builders and enjoy ‘ukulele music from community and school groups. Are you 55 years old or better? Join a week’s celebration of my 7th year of teaching at Kaunoa Senior Center for adults 55 and better with a series of special music classes and a concert, culminating in Mele’s Island Party on Friday. Learn to sing and/or play ‘ukulele to popular party songs of the Big Island, Maui, Oahu, and Kauai. The Hawaiian Serenaders will present “The Story of the ‘Ukulele and Concert” on Thursday. The Maui Ukulele Pops Band (students from my Advanced Ukulele class) will be performing during the party on Friday.

Monday, November 14, 9 a.m. – 11 a.m. Singing class to learn the Hawaiian and hapa haole songs for Mele’s Island Party on November 18. Get ahead with a party preview by learning to pronounce the Hawaiian lyrics and find out the stories behind all the songs. Class participants will sing-along with everyone else attending the party. ‘Ukulele players are invited to attend this class if they want to sing-along or to get more practice playing along.

Tuesday, November 15, 9 a.m. – 11 a.m. ‘Ukulele class to learn the songs for Mele’s Island Party on November 18. Get ahead with a party preview by learning the chords and strums to the songs, along with the unique Ukulele Mele method of playing the ‘ukulele. The ability to play C, F, and G7 confidently is required. Class participants will play ‘ukulele along with everyone else attending the party. Singers are invited to attend this class to get more practice singing along.

The Hawaiian Serenaders entertain on Maui and worldwide

Thursday, November 17, 10 a.m. – noon. Story of the ‘Ukulele and Concert by The Hawaiian Serenaders, the husband-wife duo of Richard Tom and Mele Fong, performing on ‘ukulele, u-bass, and vocals. Learn about the ‘ukulele, Hawai’i’s official instrument, from a Native Hawaiian. Learn the history, types, parts, and tuning the instrument, and how playing the ‘ukulele has evolved from rhythm accompaniment to a solo instrument. Listen to how applying different rhythm patterns affect the feel of a song. Discover the stories behind the songs as you enjoy a musical mixed plate of Hawaiian, hapa haole, pop and jazz standards that maybe unexpected to hear played on the ‘ukulele (such as songs from the Big Band era). Learn about the versatility of the little instrument that was supported by a Hawaiian king and has grown in popularity around the world today. Lunch is optional. (Read more).

Friday, November 18, 10 a.m. – noon. Mele’s Island Party includes a group sing-along of popular songs of the Hawaiian Islands plus a show by the Advanced ‘Ukulele class performing as the Maui Ukulele Pops Band. Everyone can participate in the group sing-along whether or not you attended the singing class or ‘ukulele class at the beginning of the week to learn the party songs in advance. Bring your voices and your ‘ukulele to play and sing-along with Mele Fong, with hula dancers invited to dance along. Join the party and experience the joy of making music the Ukulele Mele Way. Audio recordings for the group sing-along songs plus other songs that ‘ukulele players can learn to play the Ukulele Mele Way are available for free to Fan Club members at my website. Schedule a private webcam lesson in advance and you can learn to play a song or two before you get to Maui. Private lessons on Maui at the historic Bailey House Museum in Wailuku can also be scheduled for residents and visitors alike.
