Ukulele Mele taught 2-hour strumming workshop on November 19, 2016

Ten people participated in my 2-hour ‘Ukulele Strumming Workshop on Saturday, November 19 at the Bailey House Museum in Wailuku. I have served 492 people who attended 37 workshops since I began teaching on July 14, 2012.

I found it interesting that most people who attended the workshops live on Maui with a few snow birds from Canada, whereas I was hoping there would be more mainlanders. During the workshop, about 6 people who were visiting the museum stuck their heads into the room to see what has happening because of all the noise we were making and some even took photos of us playing music.

During the workshop I gave an introduction to the Ukulele Mele Way of holding basic home base chords with minimal muscle strain. We played 7 songs with 5 different ‘ukulele strums as follows:

  1. Horse With No Name – Chalang-alang strum
  2. Lion Sleeps Tonight – Chalang-alang strum; I Wanna Rest Strum
  3. She’ll Be Comin’ Round the Mountain – Chalang-alang strum; Hum Ding-Ah Strum
  4. This Land is Your Land – Hum Ding-Ah Strum
  5. Sloop John B – Latin Strum
  6. Medley: La Bamba/Twist and Shout – Latin Strum
  7. Hawaii Aloha – Morse Code Strum

New this month, I made a laminated flyer for the museum’s front door and made sure that people who signed up in advance got email confirmation and reminder notes stating the workshop fee is $10 for non-members or $5 for members of the museum payable-at-the-door. Last month there were was some confusion, but there was no problem this time. What a great value people get for 2-hours of my time as I am the only Native Hawaiian ‘ukulele teacher with a unique teaching method of how to play Hawai’i’s official instrument.

The next workshop will be Saturday, December 17 and will continue on the third Saturday of the month through March 2017. Click here to register online.
