In 2012, Andrea Kaumeheiwa met Mele’s challenge to come up with a song to introduce Band members at the end of shows. Andrea wrote the lyrics to the tune of Home on the Range and Mele arranged the song in the key of C with 15-chords and the Waltz Strum: Thumb Strum Up Strum Up. Here are the lyrics:
“Oh, give us a tune we sing as we croon, with na ukulele playing a-long.
We will cheer as we play in the old fashioned way, while we bring life into a song.
Mele sings the lead, as Rich on the bass keeps the beat.
Maui Ukulele Pops Band is the life of the land, so aloha we’re glad we could meet.
Hula dancers have we, Bev, Janet, Linda, and Kelcy, and don’t forget Kathleen,
The strummers sing loud, make a hit with the crowd, and bring sparkle into the scene.
The rest of the gang is here, Andrea, Ellen, Eileen, Faith, and Sandy.
Vocals by Mel and Gail their voices sound swell, Maui Ukulele Pops Band is a dandy.
Maui Ukulele Pops Band is a dandy.”
We first performed the Band Jingle at the “Experience Kaunoa” showcase of Kaunoa Senior Services classes and programs at the Maui Mall. Songs for our 20-minute program included Koni Au, Dahil Sa Iyo, Hey Good Lookin’, and Medley of La Bamba/Twist and Shout.
