Serenader show and group ‘ukulele lessons
Ukulele Mele gave free group ‘ukulele lessons at the Maui Steel Guitar Festival held annually at Ka’anapali Beach Hotel in April 2012 – 2015. In the first year, Henry Allen was in charge of the “Henry Allen Hawaiian Steel Guitar Festival” and Mele had a booth in the courtyard of the hotel. The following year Alan Akaka was in charge, the festival was renamed “Maui Hawaiian Steel Guitar Festival” and Mele no longer had a booth. Over the four years about 140 people participated in seven ‘ukulele workshops held in the ballroom and outside under the Chapel Hut. The Hawaiian Serenaders also entertained during Sunday Brunch in 2013 and 2014.
“Our 12-year-old son had an amazing learning experience with Mele during his one-on-one private lesson at the Bailey House Museum and then was lucky enough to attend one of Mele’s workshops at the Maui Hawaiian Steel Guitar Festival. The improved fundamentals from the private lesson set up a good foundation for this environment in which Mele focused on a few songs to teach to the group. In just over an hour, Mele had the whole group strumming along to “La Bamba” and “The Lion Sleeps Tonight,” with our son being a fast and eager learner. On a personal level, Mele is very approachable and has a wonderful upbeat presence that makes learning from her and enjoying her music a true joy. If we had more time on Maui, our son would have definitely have wanted another lesson with her.” – George Asai for his son Goz from California, 1 May 2015.
