March Memories of Childhood

Patty and I danced hula as teenagers.

Teenage performers at Waiokeola Church luau.

We used to sing and dance hula together when we were kids, performing as the group “Charlie’s Dollies.” My dad, Charles, managed our group of 5 girls. My cousin Patty Ohara and I were the oldest at 12 years-old, and along with her 3 sisters (the youngest being 5), we performed for family functions, church, and YMCA benefits.

March 2015 reunion for our 60th birthdays

Last week, Patty and her husband Nick came to visit us from their home in California. It had been ages since we were last together. Patty, who was born 4 days after me, came home to celebrate a big birthday with her family. Patty is still dancing hula with a group in California. It’s great that after all these years, our love of music and family still keeps us connected. Read more about Mele’s memories growing up in Hawaii.
