About 60 people total, mostly beginning ‘ukulele players, participated in two free 1-hour workshops held on Saturday morning and afternoon of the Maui Hawaiian Steel Guitar Festival at Kaanapali Hotel. The hotel provided a few instruments and we brought our personal instruments for people to use as Mele taught fun songs to play by ear (without music sheets). The workshops were held outdoors under the “Chapel Hut” and at times, gusts of wind would blow over the velcro board with chord shapes displayed that we had mounted on an easel. What fun we had!
One person commented how it was the first time someone showed her how to hold the instrument, and what a difference it made. Another person said that he goes to a lot of workshops, and Mele really knows how to teach. The workshops grew in popularity since last year, which was the first year we were involved with the Festival under Alan Akaka’s leadership.
