The Hawaiian Serenaders at Kaanapali Beach Hotel

The Hawaiian Serenaders were the change up act on Sunday, April 13 between two steel guitar groups at the 6th Annual Maui Hawaiian Steel Guitar Festival at Kaanapali Beach Hotel. This was our second year of performing on stage as part of the Sunday Brunch entertainment. We were graced by Kathy Collins who came up from the audience to dance hula to “Ulupalakua,” and by two young hula dancers whom we invited to dance “Sophisticated Hula” (as we had seen them dance this before). The spontaneity of inviting hula dancers up on stage is such a Hawaiian thing to do! We received many compliments about our mix of Hawaiian and popular music, plus it was fun to recognize people in the audience who had attended my ukulele workshops the day before. What a great weekend of teaching ukulele workshops, performing, and meeting old and making new friends.

Mele Fong is a professional singer, song arranger, and master of multiple strumming styles for the 'ukulele. She is an experienced educator with over 50+ years experience playing the 'ukulele and entertaining worldwide. Mele performs with her husband in the duo "The Hawaiian Serenaders" and leads student groups. In 1996, the duo represented the State of Hawai'i in concert at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, D.C. Mele and her husband Richard Tom were both born and raised on Oahu and now reside in Maui.
