The Maui Ukulele Pops Band is comprised of Mele's students who take Advanced 'Ukulele classes at Kaunoa Senior Center for adults 55 and better. Most students have been taking classes since Mele began teaching in January 2009. The Band repertoire consists of a variety of musical genres including Hawaiian, hapa-haole (Hawaiian style music with English words), folk, country, pop, and jazz standards. The Band has performed in public at senior facilities, community fairs and 'ukulele festivals.

Cecilia Suzuki (left) is Mele's contact for scheduling classes at Kaunoa Senior Center. Here we are in Advanced Ukulele class in December 2012, after the Band's performance at the Maui Ukulele Guild event in November. Although the class will continue in 2013 and beyond, Mele decided to stop seeking out gigs. Instead, we will consider performing as we are invited including the Upcountry Fair in June and the Maui Ukulele Guild event in November. One of the Band members presented both Mele and Cecilia handmade silk leis in Maui's color of pale pink.
